Shown in the photo is the DIY filtration system that overhangs my current guppy tub. I originally built the system as a proof of design and as part of a setup for one of my larger fish. Unfortunately, that fish did not like the setup and had to be move. Now, I'm wanting to raise guppies and don't need such strong filtration.
What's included: 300 gallon per hour pump, tubing, established media, piping, and a five gallon bucket.
How the system works:
A pump delivers water into the five gallon bucket which contains established filter media (lava rock)-- internal piping ensures that the water travels through the media. The water leaves the bucket through piping and returns to the tank. Holes in this section of piping traps air and causes aeration at the water outlet, reducing noise as well as putting oxygen into the water.
An air stone with aquarium tubing has been lined into the interior of the five gallon bucket as an additional way for tank aeration.
Pros
-Established media
-Large filtration capacity
-can be adjusted and glued for a different orientation to the thank
-Assembled and fitted parts
Cons
-Bulky
-Must be above the tank or tub unless adjusted
